Laminated Glass Melbourne

Safety, security and acoustic glass — manufactured direct from our Dandenong South factory

Laminated glass is a high-performance safety glass designed to hold together when broken — making it one of the most versatile and secure glazing options available. Built by bonding a tough interlayer between two or more panes of glass, it stays in place on impact, blocks almost all UV, and noticeably reduces outside noise. At Canon Glass, we manufacture laminated glass right here in Melbourne, giving you superior quality, competitive pricing and faster lead times, direct from the factory.

What is laminated glass?

Laminated glass is made by permanently bonding a durable plastic interlayer — most commonly polyvinyl butyral (PVB) — between two or more panes of glass under heat and pressure. The result is a single, strong panel that behaves very differently from ordinary glass when it breaks.

If laminated glass is struck hard enough to crack, the interlayer holds the broken fragments firmly in place rather than letting them fall away. The glass may craze, but it stays in the frame — maintaining a barrier and greatly reducing the risk of injury. This “hold-together” behaviour is what makes laminated glass a true safety glass and the preferred choice for overhead glazing, balustrades and security applications.

Why choose laminated glass?

  • Safety — holds together when broken, reducing the risk of injury from falling glass
  • Security — far harder to break through than standard glass, deterring forced entry
  • Acoustic insulation — the interlayer dampens sound vibrations for a noticeably quieter interior
  • UV protection — blocks up to 99% of UV radiation, helping protect furnishings, flooring and artwork from fading
  • Overhead-safe — stays in place if it breaks, making it suitable for skylights and canopies
  • Compliance — qualifies as a safety glazing material under Australian Standards (AS/NZS 2208)
  • Versatility — available in a range of thicknesses, tints and interlayer options

Laminated or toughened glass?

Both are safety glasses, but they behave differently. Toughened glass is heat-treated for strength and shatters into small, blunt granules that fall away. Laminated glass holds together when broken, and adds acoustic and UV benefits plus greater security. For the highest performance, the two can be combined as toughened laminated glass — strong, secure and retained on impact. Not sure which suits your project? Our team can help you choose.
