About Glass

Toughened Glass Melbourne

Stronger, safer glass — manufactured direct from our Dandenong South factory

Toughened glass is the smart choice wherever strength and safety matter most. Up to five times stronger than standard glass and engineered to break safely in the rare event it fails, it’s used in everything from shower screens and balustrades to splashbacks, pool fencing and full architectural facades. At Canon Glass, we manufacture premium toughened glass right here in Melbourne — giving you superior quality, competitive pricing and faster lead times, direct from the factory.

What is toughened glass?

Toughened glass — also known as tempered glass — is standard float glass that has been heat-treated to make it far stronger and safer. The glass is heated to around 620°C and then rapidly cooled with high-pressure air in a process called quenching. This locks the outer surfaces in compression and the core in tension, dramatically increasing the glass’s strength and changing the way it behaves under impact.

Where ordinary annealed glass cracks into large, dangerous shards, toughened glass shatters into small, blunt granules that are far less likely to cause serious injury. That’s why it’s classified as a safety glass, and why Australian Standards require it in high-risk areas such as doors, low-level windows, wet areas and pool surrounds.

One important point worth knowing: toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once it has been treated. Every measurement, cut-out and hole is completed beforehand — so we confirm your exact specifications up front and toughen each panel to suit your project.

Why choose toughened glass?

  • Strength — four to five times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness
  • Safety — breaks into small, relatively harmless granules rather than sharp shards
  • Heat resistance — withstands rapid temperature changes, ideal for splashbacks and sun-exposed windows
  • Compliance — meets Australian safety glazing standards (AS/NZS 2208)
  • Versatility — available in a range of thicknesses, sizes and finishes to suit your project
